Why an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
An addiction-focused intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a unique level of care that allows patients to come into the facility for multiple days per week for treatment, then return home or to our supportive housing in the evenings. The goal of an intensive outpatient program is to help an individual transition back to their life outside of substance abuse treatment while still receiving the support of an addiction treatment program.
IOP is an ideal outpatient substance abuse treatment option for a person who has reliable transportation to travel between home and their preferred addiction treatment center. And because they will not be staying overnight at a treatment facility, as they would in inpatient programs, it is crucial the person has a supportive unit to help reinforce what is covered in their treatment services.

At Next Step Recovery, our Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment (SACOT/PHP), with our addiction-focused Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) works together as part of an integrated 90-day addiction treatment program for men.
In North Carolina, the Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment program (SACOT) is the state’s version of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), a highly structured, ASAM Level 2.5 level of care that bridges the gap between inpatient rehab and outpatient treatment.
Unlike traditional Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) offered in other states, our SACOT/PHP integrates both medical and behavioral health components under North Carolina’s regulatory framework, making it more comprehensive, recovery-focused, and tailored for men ages 18 and older who need a high level of structure but are ready to begin reintegrating into daily life.
Rather than separate levels of care, our combined model provides a seamless continuum of treatment that balances structure with flexibility. Clients participate in daily therapy, group counseling, life-skills training, and relapse-prevention work designed to address both substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions.
This clinically driven approach ensures consistent support, accountability, and progress throughout recovery, helping men build confidence, emotional stability, and long-term sobriety in a safe, structured environment.

Understanding Addiction-Focused Intensive Outpatient Programs
An addiction-focused Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a structured level of care designed to support men as they transition from higher levels of treatment, such as detox, residential, or partial hospitalization, back into everyday life. This program allows clients to attend therapy at our Asheville facility for multiple hours a day, multiple days a week, and then return home or to our supportive housing in the evenings.
The goal of our IOP is to help men ages 18 and older maintain recovery progress, strengthen coping skills, and rebuild independence while continuing to receive the clinical and emotional support needed to prevent relapse. Through a combination of individual therapy, group counseling, relapse prevention education, and life-skills development, clients gain the tools necessary to sustain long-term sobriety and stability
Finding the Level of Treatment that Works for Your Recovery Journey
A person can receive treatment for substance abuse on a variety of levels, from residential treatment programs to outpatient services. The biggest difference between each level of care is the amount of time a person daily commits to addiction treatment and whether or not they will stay overnight at any treatment centers. Types of Intensive Outpatient treatment
Intensive outpatient treatment programs will usually last for a few hours 3 to 5 days a week. Your time at our addiction treatment facility consists of therapy sessions to get to the root cause of addiction, and understanding how to manage triggering situations in the future. These counseling services usually include a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy sessions.
We believe in the power of mental health in addiction recovery! Because of this, you are offered a safe, private space to address the underlying causes of your addiction and work on developing healthy coping strategies for your future. Group therapy and family therapy help you practice having hard conversations about your substance abuse with others, while also forming positive relationships.
Some participants may also benefit from dual diagnosis treatment, where you can receive treatment for co-occurring disorders like substance abuse and mental health issues at the same time.
