The Next Step Recovery alcohol and drug rehab program in Durham is a 12-week intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment program that involves patients visiting our facility 3 to 5 days a week for a few hours a day. As the program is outpatient and not inpatient, it is the perfect level of care for those that still have at-home obligations such as family and work, but still would like to receive treatment.
During their time at the Next Step Recovery drug and alcohol rehab facility in Durham, patients learn skills and coping mechanisms that help them not only succeed in early recovery but also their long-term sobriety. These lifelong skills help patients to navigate difficult stressors and triggers as they arise.
Our IOP program is multi-faceted, and the treatments we employ include group therapy, individual counseling, wilderness therapy, exercise, 12-step education, and more. We believe in providing our patients with as many effective forms of treatment as possible to ensure their success. The goal is for our patients to graduate from our program with the skills they need to live a happy and healthy life in sobriety, while also having addressed some of the main underlying issues that have led to their addiction.

With our Wilderness Adventure Therapy program, patients learn the healing power of the outdoors through innovative activities that inspire positive habits and healthy decision making.
Our Wilderness Adventure Therapy program encourages patients to practice mindfulness and be in the moment when triggering situations arise. Patients also learn discipline, build their strength, and experience the happiness that comes from experiencing something new and exciting through this therapy program.
These activities not only allow our patients to have fun and get some exercise—but they also encourage our patients to join together and form a community. This community helps with accountability and building lifelong friendships, which often leads to lasting success.
Community-based 12-step programs are excellent ways to address underlying issues that lead to addiction in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Most 12-step programs are anonymous, which allows members to open up and share without fear. This aids in the healing process and, in turn, with long-lasting sobriety.
12-step programs take a community-based approach to recovery and encourage members to work together to solve their common ailments. This community approach creates lasting bonds, and it encourages members to do their best. At Next Step Recovery in Durham, we see the importance of 12-step work and encourage all of our patients to work a 12-step program into their journey to sobriety.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are both important aspects of the treatment program we provide at Next Step Recovery in Durham. Both DBT and CBT allow patients to handle stressors in their daily lives and provide them with the coping skills they need to stay strong in the face of triggers. DBT and CBT combined help with lowering stress, anxiety, and discomfort.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a logic-based approach to addressing negative thought patterns and behaviors. With CBT, patients can recognize these patterns and behaviors so they can be addressed and replaced with positive alternatives.
CBT is a proven method that helps patients suffering from:
DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) helps patients to better manage their emotions, thoughts, and feelings during tough times. With DBT, the negative feelings and emotions of a patient are validated, but they are also addressed healthily.
DBT helps patients to face the many stressors and triggers that they will experience not only in early recovery but also in their day-to-day lives. Patients learn how to be resilient, regulate their emotions, and practice mindfulness when thoughts of relapse surface. This allows our patients to fight off any urges they may have and redirect these feelings to something more positive. With DBT, patients learn about:
Exercise is an excellent way to release stress from the body and mind. It allows us to be present, encourages serenity and peace, and allows patients to feel a sense of pride and mastery. Our Exercise Therapy program includes meditation, martial arts, and yoga. Combined, patients can improve their physical and mental health.
We want our patients to feel a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. Our Exercise Therapy is built around purposeful exercise that creates these positive feelings. It is also designed in a way that helps our patients to connect strongly with each other and deepen their bonds as a community.
At Next Step Recovery, we ensure that our patients have the life skills they need to succeed in long-term recovery. Because of this, we ask that our patients attend class, work, or volunteer at least 30 hours a week. Patients are also required to attend support groups throughout the week to encourage growth and learn new skills.
These responsibilities not only create a sense of purpose but also prepare the patient to learn to balance their sobriety and care with the pressures of the outside world. We give our patients the tools they need to transition back to their daily lives and continue to be successful.
