Sex Differences in Substance Use

Drugs and alcohol affect men and women in a similar way. With that said, men are more likely to suffer from addiction to a variety of different substances than women. Men are also more likely to end up in the emergency room and die from overdose (1).

At Next Step Recovery, we focus on treating men and meeting their unique needs. Our program is designed to create a sense of companionship, comradery, and compassion between the men in our program. No one should have to fight addiction on their own. Next Step Recovery provides a support network for our patients to lean on and help each other through challenging times.

Intensive Outpatient Alcohol Rehab and Drug Rehab

The intensive outpatient alcohol and drug rehab program at Next Step Recovery is designed to provide patients with the care they need. Patients learn valuable skills that help not only with early recovery but also long-term recovery. The IOP (intensive outpatient) program at Next Step Recovery is a 12-week program that involves patients visiting the facility 3 to 5 days a week for a few hours at a time. This level of care is perfect for those that have at-home obligations like work or family but still need professional support.

The IOP program at Next Step Recovery is multi-faceted. We offer DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), yoga, meditation, Wilderness Adventure Therapy, and more. With the diversity of services we provide, we are able to ensure the needs of all of our patients are met.

Wilderness Adventure Therapy

Wilderness Adventure Therapy is the perfect way for the men in our program to bond, get some exercise, connect with nature, and have a ton of fun in sobriety! A major concern patients have when they get sober is whether or not they will be able to have a good time without the use of substances. Our Wilderness Adventure Therapy offers a variety of activities that patients love, which include:

  • Watersports
  • Hiking
  • Paintball
  • High Rope Courses
  • And More

Along with having a good time, patients are able to practice mindfulness and find peace in the moment. We know how important it is for patients in early sobriety to clear their heads and relax. Outdoor activities like hiking are the perfect way to do so.

Community is extremely important for recovery. Our Wilderness Adventure Therapy program allows the men in our care to form a sense of brotherhood and community. The relationships they form are often lifelong.

12-Step Programs Support

12-step programs provide additional support for patients both while they are patients at Next Step Recovery and after they’ve graduated the program. Most 12-step programs are anonymous, which allows individuals to open up and share without fear of judgment.

12-step programs offer a community approach. Those in 12-step programs are encouraged to work together to meet their common goals. They work with others and provide each other with support.

We highly encourage our patients to participate in a 12-step program.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise is extremely important for both the mind and the body. The men in our program love the various forms of exercise that we provide for them. These include martial arts, meditation, and more. With skill-based exercise, the men in our treatment program are able to feel a sense of accomplishment and mastery. This helps to build self-esteem at a time when patients are at their lowest. Exercise programs like BJJ also allow patients to deepen their bonds and find comradery.
